Each place is here because a checked source backs it: its own site, its booking page or its map listing gives its kind, price or who it suits. Not ranked: most searched first. A dash means our sources don't say. Each value comes from the sources listed at the end of this page.

A cruise ship on this page is a motor ship with cabins: Mövenpick calls the MS Royal Lily a flagship cruiser with 56 cabins4. A dahabiya is the other way to sail, a shallow-bottomed, barge-like boat with sails and no motor-driven propeller5.

Ship size varies more than you’d guess. The Salacia takes only 59 passengers, where most boats its size carry 140–160 or more6, Ashranda says.

How much does a Nile cruise cost?

A standard 4-day Luxor to Aswan cruise costs US$600–1,2007 per person with meals and major excursions, Egypt Tours Plus says. The named ships cost more, and agents quote different fares for the same boat.

Standard 4-day cruise: US$600–1,2007

  • Standard Luxor to Aswan cruiseEgypt Tours Plus estimate, meals and excursions, per person US$600–US$1,200
  • M/S SalaciaLuxor to Aswan, double cabin, shorter to longer sailing by season, per person, for 3-night / per person, for 4-night US$835–US$1,595
  • Mövenpick MS Royal LilyAswan to Luxor or Luxor to Aswan, double cabin, by season US$1,109–US$1,727
  • The Oberoi ZahraLuxor to Aswan, double cabin, agents differ, per person, for 3-night / for 3-night, 4-day US$2,215–US$2,815

Whole-cruise prices per person sharing a double cabin, mostly from booking agents. Not nightly rates.

The cheap end goes lower: a 2-night cruise from Aswan to Luxor should cost from US$758 per night with meals, depending on the boat, Wikivoyage says. Across all Nile river cruises the spread is US$150–1,5007 per person per night, by Egypt Tours Plus’s count.

What moves the fare:

  • Season. For the Royal Lily’s 4-night Luxor to Aswan cruise, Egypt Tours Plus quotes US$1,455 per person from May to September and US$1,727 from October to April9.
  • Validity. Memphis Tours’ Salacia fares hold until 30 April 20271.
  • Your choices. The price depends on the season, how far ahead you book, and the accommodation and activities you choose10, Original Travel says.

Booking rules that differ

Civitatis: free cancellation to 48 hours16

Cruise ships don’t share one set of terms. These are the ones that change your plans:

  • Package only. The Steam Ship Sudan is sold only as part of a trip designed by Voyageurs du Monde’s advisers15, who book your flights too.
  • Pickup. The Civitatis cruise collects you only from hotels and boats on Luxor’s east bank, usually at about 12 noon16.
  • Cancellation. Civitatis allows free cancellation up to 48 hours16 before the start. The AAA-listed package refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours17 before departure.
  • Timing. Booking 3–6 months7 ahead gets better availability, Egypt Tours Plus advises.
  • Walk-ins. Most cruise ships in Luxor have a reception at the entrance you can walk into3, Wikivoyage says, so you can ask in person.

Dahabiyas want money earlier. The Nile Dahabiya takes a 25%18 deposit, while Dahabeyat takes 25% on confirmation and the rest 45 days before19 embarkation.

Ship versus sailing boat

Cruise ship or dahabiya: which suits you?

A big ship suits you if you want more facilities; a dahabiya suits a quieter setting and a smaller group22, says Swan Dahabiya, a dahabiya operator.

Nile cruise ship

Motor ships with cabins, sold as package itineraries

  • Suits travellers who want more facilities, Swan Dahabiya says
  • Most ships of the Salacia's size carry 140–160 passengers or more
  • Fixed weekly departures, e.g. Saturday from Luxor on the Sonesta Star Goddess
Palm trees and grazing goats on the bank of the Nile

Dahabiya

A shallow-bottomed, barge-like Nile boat with sails

  • No motor-driven propeller; towed by tugboats
  • A quieter setting and a smaller group, Swan Dahabiya says
  • Swan Dahabiya takes up to 22 guests

A cruise ship suits:

  • Families. The Zahra’s Luxury Suite with Two Bedrooms23 is aimed at families or groups, Oberoi says, and LiveAboard.com lists the Esmeralda as a Family Friendly Cruise24.
  • Couples celebrating. The Royal Lily’s Royal Suite is aimed at special occasions4, Mövenpick says. The Esmeralda’s honeymoon package adds a candlelit à la carte dinner on the sun deck25.
  • Guests with limited mobility. The Zahra has private docking with access for physically challenged guests26, Oberoi says.

A cruise ship doesn’t suit:

  • Point-to-point travellers. Cruise boats sell package itineraries, not point-to-point trips3. Upper Egypt Bus Co. runs buses between Luxor and Aswan27.
  • Small-group fans. Nour El Nil’s Assouan dahabiya has 2 Panoramic Rooms and 6 cabins and starts at Esna, about 33 miles south of Luxor28. Start by comparing Nile dahabiya operators.
  • Anyone who’d rather sleep on land. The East Bank holds the city, museums, hotels and restaurants3, so look at hotels near Luxor’s museums.

Temples along the river

A short cruise, stop by stop

The Sonesta Star Goddess’s 3-night13 Aswan to Luxor cruise fits the river temples into its middle days:

Philae entry: EGP 55032

When Stop
Day 2, 07:3029
High Dam, granite quarries and the Temple of Philae
Day 2, 13:3029

19:0029

Day 3, 06:3029

Kom Ombo’s temple honours the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Horus the Elder30. The Temple of Philae is open 7AM to 4PM31 every day, and foreign adults pay EGP 55032 (about US$10) (checked October 2026). Wikivoyage says the one-hour8 stop there is generally enough.

Some packages add Abu Simbel, on the western bank of Lake Nasser about 230 km34 southwest of Aswan.

Boarding in Luxor leaves time either side for the big sights: the West Bank holds the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, and the East Bank Luxor Temple and Karnak Temple3. For a fuller plan, see what a short Luxor to Aswan cruise looks like by day.

Long cruises between Cairo and Aswan

The Mövenpick MS Darakum is one of very few vessels that can sail the full Cairo-Aswan route35, Egypt Tours Plus says. Its long cruises run 11, 13, 14 or 15 days35 on fixed annual dates.

The Jules Verne cruise calls at Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor, Denderah, Abydos, Tell el-Amarna, Minya and Beni Hassan36 on the way to Cairo. On Jules Verne’s separate Cairo to Aswan tour, Day 238 covers the Giza Pyramids in the morning and the Grand Egyptian Museum after lunch.

Most of Tutankhamun’s tomb goods are now in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza39. Egypt Independent reported on 18 October 2026 that its ticket for foreign visitors rises to EGP 1,830 (about US$33) from 1 November 202640. For routes and lengths, see the Cairo to Aswan cruise plan.

Seasons on the Nile

When to sail

Peak: November to March7

Nile cruise seasons from Luxor
  • Peak cruise season November to March
  • Shoulder months, better value April to May, September to October
  • Hottest months June to August

For the long Cairo route, October to April35 has the most comfortable weather.
