Quick pick: the fastest way in from Cairo is a flight of about 1 hour1; the cheapest listed fare is the Cairo bus from US$74.
Arrivals hall to hotel
The trip from the plane to your hotel is short, and the only money you need at the airport is for your visa and the taxi.
About 6 km to the centre2
Buy a visa on arrival at the kiosks before immigration: US$30, cash only.
People will grab your luggage to 'help' you, so keep a firm grip.
Drivers and touts outside the doors charge US$10–20: ignore them.
No public bus runs to town and taxis have no meters; the fare should be no more than EGP 300.
The city centre is about 6 km away, with most hotels on the East Bank.
If haggling at the rank wears thin, you have a fallback: Uber doesn’t work in Luxor, but its sister app Careem does1.
Most hotels are on the East Bank, along with Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple, the museums and the trains1. Pick your base with the guide to Luxor accommodation by budget and traveller type.
Plan your dates
UK direct flights to Luxor leave on fixed weekdays, and Cairo’s overnight trains leave late in the evening.
Overnight trains leave 9PM–11PM1
Blue Bus Egypt runs from Ramsis in Cairo to Luxor station 4 times a day5. The overnight express trains are the same as the daytime trains, run by Egyptian National Railways (ENR)1.
Cash and cards
Have US dollar cash ready for the visa and Egyptian pounds for the taxi.

Air, rail, road and river
Flying wins from Cairo and the UK, the train and bus from Cairo take most of a day, and a Nile cruise brings you in from Aswan.

In Luxor, buses leave regularly from behind Luxor Temple1 for most major cities. GoBus and SuperJet leave from different spots near the train station1.
Book the deluxe sleeper trains online with Abela Trains1. ENR’s ordinary trains can’t be booked and aren’t on timetables1, so you buy those tickets at the station.
Treat the Cairo Portal rail fares in the table with care: they give no currency, so they’re probably not the higher US-dollar fares charged to foreigners8.
Upper Egypt Bus Co. links Hurghada, Safagah, Luxor and Aswan9. A day trip from Hurghada is possible, but Wikivoyage calls it “a bit mad”: it eats up most of a 20-hour day9.
If you want one anyway, a guided tour takes the driving off your hands.

Luxor has its own international gateway, Luxor International Airport2, with direct flights from several European cities1. You only need to change in Cairo if your airline routes you that way.
Visa on arrival valid up to 30 days7
Wikipedia’s airlines table for the airport lists these carriers:
Luxor Airport isn’t a giant. The terminal has 48 check-in desks, 8 gates and 5 baggage belts, and a 2005 upgrade let it handle up to 8 million passengers a year13.
Yes: easyJet flies from London Gatwick14, and TUI Airways from Manchester and London Gatwick15. TUI says direct flights take around five to five and a half hours16.
The easyJet route started on 11 November 202414 and runs seasonally13. TUI also warns that direct flights aren’t always available and many routes stop over, usually in Cairo, which stretches the trip to seven to nine hours or more16.
Egypt sets the entry rules, not Luxor, and they depend on your passport. For British travellers, GOV.UK’s Egypt travel advice says:
Egypt’s official e-Visa portal says to apply at least 7 days before departure and pay online by Visa card, MasterCard or other debit cards17. Passport officers can check your e-visa on their system18 when you land.
Other passports have their own rules:
If you change planes in Cairo, from 1 August 20267 you can also buy a digital visa on arrival there, from self-service machines or the Visa on Arrival portal.
Both banks of the Nile
Taxis, Careem and the Nile boats cover almost every trip in town. Taxis have no meters, but drivers accept the usual rates if you stay firm1.
Local ferry EGP 201
The boats are your link to the West Bank, home to the major ruins, including the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens1. Get your bearings with the Luxor east and west bank map.
Before you travel overland
FCDO advice updated 4 August 202620
Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs advises its citizens to arrive by air when travelling to tourist areas on the Nile such as Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel19. The UK FCDO is just as frank about overland travel:
The FCDO advice was updated on 4 August 2026, and it lists Luxor and the Valley of the Kings as exceptions20 to its Western Desert warning.
Watch the weather on early road trips. On 23 October 202621, see.news reported that Egypt’s Meteorological Authority warned of morning fog that could turn dense on some roads in northern Upper Egypt.
Easy ones to dodge
The East Bank holds Luxor Temple, Karnak Temple and the museums; the major tombs are across the river on the West Bank.
Luxor, capital of Luxor Governorate, is about 670 km from Cairo and about 220 km north of Aswan.
Yes: EgyptAir and Nile Air fly Cairo to Aswan regularly, averaging about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Winter, from November to early March.
