A Ptolemaic-Roman hall

What you see at the Temple of Khnum

The Temple of Khnum is a single roofed hall from the Ptolemaic-Roman period, sitting 9 m below the modern street1. The original sanctuary and other rooms have disappeared or lie beneath the modern city2.

What you’ll find inside the hall:

  • A temple dedicated mainly to the creator god Khnum and the goddess Neith2.
  • A roof resting on eighteen columns and six half-columns2.
  • A freshly restored ceiling: Egypt’s official monuments site says the ceiling restoration is complete and work continues on the wall paintings4.

The same official site calls it one of the most important temples in Esna4, and it’s the reason most visitors stop in the town at all.

Car, train or minibus

By train or minibus

Esna’s railway station is on the east bank of the Nile1, across the river from the temple, so the train doesn’t drop you at the door. Here’s how the trip goes without a car:

  1. Ride from Luxor to Esna

Take the train or a local minibus via Armant; the times are in the table above.

  2. Cross to the west bank

Esna station is on the east bank; the temple is across the Nile on the west bank.

  3. Find the ticket office

The ticket office is 200 m from the temple, linked to it by a covered souk with the usual hawkers.

  4. Walk down into the hall

The temple sits 9 m below street level, and stairs take you down into it.

Opening hours and the best time to go

Best: November to early March7

Wikivoyage lists the temple as open daily, 07:00–16:00 from October to May and 07:00–17:00 from June to September1. Google Maps shows later closing on some days: 07:00–19:00 on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday, 07:00–17:00 on the other days6 (checked October 2026).

The best time for the Luxor area is winter, November to early March7. In June, July and August average highs climb above 40 °C8, so an early start makes the day far easier.

Access and stairs

Is the Temple of Khnum suitable for children and wheelchairs?

Only with some care: the hall lies over 25 feet below ground level9, and you go down by stairs.

9 m below street level1

Lokalee, a booking agent, says this about its private Esna Temple tour from Luxor:

  • Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller10, though the temple is reached by stairs.
  • The tour suits all physical fitness levels10.
  • It is tagged wheelchair accessible10, which conflicts with Egypt Tours Plus’s warning about worn steps and limited handrails.

Arriving by boat

Esna lock and Nile cruises

If you arrive by cruise boat, Esna’s lock can hold boats up for hours1.

10-metre drop at the lock11

  • The lock works like a lift for boats, handling a 10-metre drop11 in the river level.
  • On the Oberoi Philae’s 4-night itinerary, the boat crosses the lock at 2:00 pm on Day 312.
  • Nour El Nil runs a 5-night, 6-day13 dahabiya cruise that starts in Esna and sails to Aswan.

Old Esna on foot

Around the temple in Esna town

Esna has more to see than its temple, and most of it sits close to the old centre:

  • Al-Qīsāriyya, a traditional covered market, is directly south of the Temple of Khnum1.
  • The Old Esna Mosque, with its adobe minaret1, appears on your approach to the temple.
  • Wakālat al-Jiddāwī is a caravanserai believed to have been built by Ḥasan Bek al-Jiddāwī in the 1700s1.
  • The Esna Old Barrage went up in 19081 to control the flow of Nile water.
