What a felucca is

Usually ten passengers1

A felucca is a traditional wooden sailing boat with a single sail1, a type also found around the Mediterranean. On the Nile River they’re still used as transport in Aswan and Luxor1.

What sets it apart from the other boats on the river:

  • Size: a boat usually carries ten passengers, with a crew of two or three1.
  • Sails: just one. A Nile dahabiya is a shallow-bottomed, barge-like vessel with two or more sails5.
  • Age: the earliest known depiction of a sail comes from Egypt, dated to about 3100 BCE6.

Before you book

Is a felucca ride worth it?

Yes, if you want a slow sail on the Nile River as a break from temples and tombs. Whether it’s good on the day comes down to timing, heat and wind.

Best in the late afternoon7

It works best when:

  • You go late: Exo Travel says its Luxor sailing is best in the late afternoon7, and agents sell dedicated sunset rides4.
  • You come in the cooler months: the best time to visit is November to early March8, while summer highs average above 40 °C9.
  • You’re travelling with children: Luxor and Aswan says its ride suits all ages3, and its child rates are in the table below.

Where the boats go

Banana Island at sunset

TUI sunset trip: 3 hours10

Luxor and Aswan’s ride sails to Banana Island3, an island covered with banana plantations, and other operators head there too:

  • Exo Travel’s trip sails upriver from Luxor7, and guests take a short walk among fruit trees on the island.
  • TUI’s 3-hour10 sunset trip, supplied by Travco Group for Tourism, lists entrance fees as included.

Know before you sail

Wind and safety on the river

Feluccas run on wind, so ask what happens on a gusty day before you book.

Windy days: motorboat instead10

Accidents do happen on the Nile:

  • Practical Boat Owner reported in January 201011 that a British man died when his boat capsized in a sudden gust near Aswan.
  • Egyptian Streets reported in July 2016 that four Pakistani tourists were killed and three12 were missing after a felucca sank in Cairo.
  • UK travel advice notes that overcrowding and poor safety standards13 have caused accidents on Nile cruises.
