Inside the complex

What you’ll see at the Temple of Hathor

Work began 54 BCE2

The Dendera Temple Complex belongs to Hathor, among the most important and popular deities in ancient Egypt3. Egypt’s official monuments site links her with music, joy, dance and motherhood, and calls her the lady of the sky3.

By Egyptian standards, the temple you walk into is late work. Building began in 54 BCE, and the hypostyle hall went up in the Roman period, under Tiberius2.

What to look out for once you’re inside:

  • The hypostyle hall and its painted ceilings. Restoration by the Supreme Council of Antiquities has brought back the original colours and clarity of the painted scenes on the walls and ceilings2.
  • The roof, reached by a processional stairway2.
  • The crypts under the Hathor temple, with twelve chambers2.
  • The Roman birth house (mammisi), from the reigns of Trajan and Marcus Aurelius2.

Ceiling art

The Dendera Zodiac ceiling

The Dendera Zodiac is a carved relief from the temple ceiling. Egypt’s official monuments site lists the astronomical carvings on the ceiling3 among the temple’s most notable features.

Removed from the ceiling in 18202

The zodiac you see in place today is a replica. Frenchmen removed it from the ceiling in 18202, and it was later replaced with a copy. The original relief is now in the Louvre2, so the trip to Paris is the only way to see the real thing.

Egypt’s official monuments site lists the temple as open every day from 07:00 to 17:003 (checked October 2026), and Google Maps shows Mon–Sun 07:00–17:005 as well.

Egypt Discovery, a tour operator, suggests 60–90 minutes6 for the main temple, its reliefs and the hypostyle hall. Allow up to two hours6 if you add the Roman mammisi, the small on-site museum and the roof.

Abydos is a long road trip from Luxor on its own, but it can be combined with a day trip to Dendera7. This private tour from Luxor does exactly that pairing:

Some long Nile cruises stop here too. Jules Verne’s Aswan to Cairo itinerary spends Day 6 at Qena/Denderah, after Day 3 at Kom Ombo/Edfu8. Read up on that earlier Nile cruise temple stop at Edfu if you’re comparing Ptolemaic temples.

Access and mobility

Is Dendera Temple accessible?

Only partly. Egypt Discovery rates access as limited, because the complex has uneven stone, steps and raised platforms6.

  • There are ramps to some areas, but many original thresholds and stairs remain, and full access to the roof is not possible6.
  • Getting to the rooftop and the underground crypts means climbing steep stone steps9, according to Egypt Tours Plus.
  • The same operator says the main courtyard and large sections of the Temple of Hathor are relatively accessible with assistance9.
  • Egypt Discovery can arrange a vehicle drop-off close to the main entrance and a wheelchair assistant on request6.

On the plus side, the site is small enough to reach everything on foot1.
