Both banks, the island, the river
Luxor splits into the East Bank and the West Bank5, with the Nile between them. Base yourself on the East Bank for walkable temples and restaurants, the West Bank for village quiet near the tombs, or a boat if you’re sailing on to Aswan.
Most accommodation is on the East Bank1

Cruise and dahabiya fares are per person for the whole trip, so they sit in the boat section further down.
What's on each side
The East Bank is the city side: it holds Luxor Temple, the Temple of Karnak, museums, trains, hotels and restaurants1. The Nile Corniche (Corniche el-Nil) links most of the major sights6, and the Luxor Museum shows selected artefacts from the tomb of King Tut5.
Sonesta St. George sits on Corniche El Nile Street7, Pyramisa is a few minutes’ walk from Luxor Temple8, and a press release on its reopening puts Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa within minutes of Karnak Temple9. Luxor International Airport is about 10 km10 from the Steigenberger Nile Palace; see luxor airport taxi and transfers for the ride in.
The West Bank holds the major ruins, including the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens, plus some small hotels and a more relaxed vibe1. The East Bank is reached by ferry5, so expect a crossing for evenings in town.
Al Moudira sits 6 km from the town centre and runs a free shuttle to Luxor twice a day14. New Memnon Hotel is about 100 yards15 from the Colossi of Memnon. The bank also has a good choice of places to stay and eat16; see restaurants in Luxor for both sides.
Jolie Ville Luxor sits on a private island in the Nile, surrounded by 150 acres18 of gardens. You arrive by boat and shuttle19, and transport to downtown Luxor is free if you book direct and reserve in advance18. HalalBooking puts it 20.6 km19 from the Valley of the Kings.
Sleeping on the river
Stay in a hotel if Luxor is your base; pick a Nile cruise boat or a dahabiya if you want to sail between Luxor and Aswan20 and sleep on board.

Seasons and rates
Book for November to early March1 if you want the best weather. Summer highs from June to August run above 40 °C36, but some hotels are up to 50% cheaper or more1 in the summer low season, while others keep the same prices.
Best: November to early March1
Some boats stop in the heat: the Gaïa dahabiya rests from June to August37. For temperatures by month, see the month by month weather guide.
At some, up to an age limit: under 6 at Sonesta St. George (one child sharing), up to 17 at Steigenberger Resort Achti with no extra bed, and 0–2 at Iberotel.
Mara House, a Luxor guesthouse, suggests 3 nights, and Outlook Traveller calls 3 days the bare minimum.
