The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities lists the tomb as open every day, 6AM to 5PM3 (checked October 2026), and Google Maps shows the same: Mon–Sun 06:00–17:006. For the valley as a whole, Wikivoyage gives shorter winter hours of 6AM–4PM2, so in winter don’t leave the tomb for late afternoon.

Whatever the season, arrive early in the morning, especially in summer7.

Across the Nile

How to get to Tutankhamun’s tomb from Luxor

You reach the tomb by crossing the Nile to the West Bank, then riding up to the royal valley in the hills just behind the West Bank2. Budget time for queues at every stage.

Queues of 15-30 minutes per stop2

  1. Cross to the West Bank

The royal valley is on the West Bank, which Egypt's official tourism site says you reach by ferry.

  2. Ride up to the valley

Wikivoyage prefers a taxi or a bicycle for the trip into the hills behind the West Bank.

  3. Buy tickets at the valley office

The valley has its own ticket office. Pay by bank card: cash isn't accepted.

  4. Queue at the tomb

Expect at least 15–30 minutes in line at each tomb, the ticket office and the car park.

What's down there

Inside Tutankhamun’s tomb

The tomb is small: four chambers plus an entrance staircase and corridor10. It’s also smaller and less decorated than other Egyptian royal tombs of its time1.

Four chambers10

  • What’s there: Tutankhamun’s mummy and sarcophagus1, still on display in the tomb.
  • What isn’t: the treasure. The tomb’s riches are no longer inside it2.
  • Its condition: flooding and heavy tourist traffic have damaged it since its discovery, and a renovation was completed in 20191.

The honest take

Is Tutankhamun’s tomb worth the extra ticket?

Tutankhamun’s tomb is worth it for the name and the mummy, less so for the walls. It’s in higher demand from tourists than any other tomb in the valley10.

Wikivoyage calls it barely worth visiting, because it is much smaller and less decorated than most royal tombs2. If painted walls matter more to you, the tomb of Seti I (KV1711) is, in Wikivoyage’s words, the longest in the valley and one of the best decorated2.

Short on time or budget? There are replicas too:

  • A replica of the burial chamber was built nearby to reduce tourist pressure on the original tomb10.
  • The grounds of Howard Carter’s House hold a replica of Tutankhamun’s tomb, made and donated by Factum Arte12. Carter built the mudbrick house in 191012, handy for his digs in the valley.

For a smaller replica to take home, the Luxor souvenir shopping guide covers the stalls.

The discovery

Who found Tutankhamun’s tomb, and when?

Found November 192213

Excavators led by Howard Carter and his patron, Lord Carnarvon, found the tomb in November 192213. Robbers had broken in twice in the years just after the burial, yet Wikipedia calls the discovery the most famous find in the history of Egyptology10.

Tutankhamun was the third-to-last pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty, ruling c. 1332–1323 BC14. He became pharaoh at between 8 and 9 years of age, and his administration brought back Egypt’s traditional polytheistic religion14.

The treasure

What was found in Tutankhamun’s tomb

The tomb’s contents are numbered at 5,398 objects1. Among them:

5,398 objects1

  • a gilded wooden outer shrine1 that took up most of the burial chamber;
  • the innermost coffin, made mainly of 110.4 kg1 of solid gold;
  • two miniature coffins1 holding the mummies of Tutankhamun’s stillborn daughters;
  • the golden funerary mask10, among the best-known artworks from ancient Egypt.

Most of the tomb’s goods are now in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza1. Its galleries open 9AM–6PM most days and until 9PM on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with last entry one hour before closing15.

Closer to the tomb, the Luxor Museum shows selected artefacts from the tomb of King Tut16. Tutankhamun himself stayed put, while other royal mummies moved: Amenhotep III’s went from the Egyptian Museum, Cairo to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization17.

The Nefertiti theory

In 2015, Nicholas Reeves proposed that voids behind the tomb’s walls were the burial chamber of Nefertiti, the great royal wife of Akhenaten18. Later radar scans showed no hidden chambers18.

Plan around the heat

Who the visit suits

Tutankhamun’s tomb suits visitors who can cope with heat, queues and a fair bit of walking. There’s no specific access information for the tomb itself, so plan around the valley:

Best November to early March7

  • Mobility: Pyramids Land Tours, a Cairo operator, calls the royal valley the most physically demanding major site in Egypt for anyone with mobility concerns19.
  • Footing: some travellers have slipped on the way up or down9 the valley.
  • Heat: average highs are above 40 °C in June, July and August20; the best time to visit is November to early March7.

Make a day of it

Nearby on the West Bank

Tutankhamun’s tomb fits easily into a day of West Bank sights. These are the ones closest in theme:

  • The rest of the valley: see a picture of Valley of the Kings tombs and pick your other tombs.
  • Valley of the Queens: its general ticket doesn’t cover Nefertari’s tomb, which needs its own ticket9, and other sources say the tomb is currently closed16.
  • Deir el-Medina: the village of the artisans who built the royal tombs21.
  • Hatshepsut’s temple: the queen who became pharaoh, at Deir al-Bahari22.
  • Colossi of Memnon: two huge stone statues of Amenhotep III, free to see from the roadside9.

Questions people ask

Did Tutankhamun live around the same time as Cleopatra?

No. Cleopatra VII reigned from 51 to 30 BC, long after Tutankhamun's reign of c. 1332-1323 BC.

How do you get from Cairo to Luxor to see the tomb?

Direct flights take about 1 hour; the train takes about 10 hours.
