Two banks, two budgets

East Bank and West Bank side by side

Your sightseeing budget depends on which side of the Nile River you’re on. The river splits Luxor into the East Bank and the West Bank5, and the West Bank’s tombs cost more to enter.

Local ferry across: EGP 2015

East Bank

The city side, with Luxor Temple, Karnak, museums, trains and hotels

  • Luxor Temple: EGP 500 adult
  • Karnak with its Open Museum: EGP 600 adult
  • Short taxi rides in town: EGP 40–60
Visitors walking the long causeway toward the terraces of Hatshepsut's temple under the cliffs

West Bank

The major ruins and burial grounds, reached by ferry

  • Valley of the Kings: EGP 750 adult
  • Hatshepsut Temple: EGP 440 adult
  • Most sights and tombs: EGP 220–750

Plan the West Bank as a separate day. The West Bank is reached by ferry5, so a crossing comes on top of every ticket you buy there.

What you'll pay

Luxor prices for tickets, transport and trips

Entry tickets are the biggest fixed cost of a Luxor trip. Transport, rooms and extras are where your own choices change the total.

How much is a Luxor Temple ticket?

A Luxor Temple ticket costs foreign adults EGP 500 (about US$9) (checked October 2026) and students EGP 2501 (about US$5). Al Aqaria’s report on the 1 November 2024 price revision gives the same prices6, which suggests the Ministry’s page is up to date.

Opening times and the way in are on the page about visiting details for Luxor Temple.

What the table doesn’t tell you:

  • Hatshepsut Temple: if you see EGP 3607 (about US$7), that’s an old price still on the Ministry’s Deir al-Bahari page. Its Hatshepsut page and ticket site list EGP 4407 (about US$8).
  • The Valley of the Queens ticket covers the 3 open tombs8, but not Nefertari’s, which needs its own ticket.
  • Student rates differ: Wikivoyage gives 50% off West Bank fees for students under 248, while Karnak’s student price applies to students up to age 303.
  • Most other West Bank sights and tombs charge EGP 220–7508 (about US$4–14). Visiting more of the West Bank? Read the guide to the Tombs of the Nobles too.
  • Before a Valley of the Kings trip, decide which extra tombs you want: Tutankhamun’s tomb needs an extra ticket and Seti I’s tomb needs its own ticket9.

Luxor Pass price

Wikivoyage says a Premium Luxor Pass costs US$250 (checked October 2026) and covers entry to all Luxor sights for 5 consecutive days8. Add up the tickets you’d buy anyway from the table above before you pay for it.

Getting around: ferries, taxis and the airport

The electric cars at the Valley of the Kings wait at the entrance gates during official visiting hours10. El Watan reported in May 2023 that foreigners would pay EGP 20 (under US$1) a ride from 1 October 2023, though Egypt Day Tours calls the tram free11.

Nile cruises and dahabiyas

A Nile cruise is priced for the whole trip, so compare it with hotel nights plus tickets, not with a single night’s rate.

  • AAA lists a 4-night Luxor to Aswan package from US$615, though another ticket option on the same page shows US$31012.
  • Viking River Cruises Australia sells its 12-day Pharaohs & Pyramids cruisetour, which visits Luxor and Aswan, from AU$10,99513.
  • Princess Farida says its dahabiya rates include a 28.8%14 service charge, VAT and all taxes, so check what a price covers before you compare boats.

A bookable option is this Luxor cruise with guided tours and Abu Simbel. For sailing boats one by one, see dahabiya prices and boats compared.

Hot air balloon and felucca prices

A hot air balloon ride in Luxor is sold as a tour, and the cards below show what the operators charge. Flights run at sunrise or at sunset15, and Egypt’s official tourism site recommends the sunrise ride5. A private sunset felucca sail is the other easy add-on.

Cards, cash and ATMs

How do you pay at Luxor’s sights?

You pay by bank card. Since May 2023, Egypt’s tourism ministry has sold site and museum tickets for bank cards only, without cash16.

Bank cards only since May 202316

The self-service ticket machines at the Valley of the Kings take bank cards16. For everything else, hold on to small notes: Egypt has a constant shortage of small notes and coins17.

ATMs and money changers in Luxor

  • At Luxor International Airport: the arrival hall has two ATMs, and one charges no withdrawal fee15. Banque Misr has a branch in the arrival hall, open 24 hours a day during Ramadan18. Currency exchange is only available in front of immigration control15.
  • Anywhere: Egyptian ATMs usually charge no withdrawal fee17, but steer clear of Euronet machines.
  • In town: Banque Misr’s branches on Al Television Street and Khaled Ibn Al Walid Street19 offer withdrawals and currency exchange20. Classic Holidays mentions a currency exchange bureau in the Sonesta St George hotel21 on an undated page.
  • On the West Bank: Trip.com lists an ATM and currency exchange22 at Luxor Guest House in Al Bairat.

Do it yourself or book

Which suits whom

Choose a do-it-yourself day if you can haggle and share costs. Choose an organised tour if you’d rather hand over the planning.

Go it alone if…

  • you can find 4 people8 at your hotel or hostel to share a taxi
  • you can negotiate: hiring a taxi yourself is cheaper8
  • you want time at each site: hotel-run West Bank tours keep a fixed schedule, mostly with only 20 minutes at each site8
  • you’d rather not pay for sights you’d skip: on those tours you may be expected to visit and pay for a sight8 that doesn’t interest you

Book a tour if…

  • you’d rather skip the haggling: asking your hotel to arrange the taxi saves a lot of grief8
  • you want a driver sorted for you: many places to stay offer West Bank tours with their own driver8
  • you’d like a guided day covering both banks, like the shared and private tours below

Summer savings or winter comfort

  • Go in summer to save on rooms: some hotels are up to 50% cheaper or more15 in the low season, though others keep the same prices. Summer highs in June, July and August are above 40 °C23.
  • Go in winter for comfort: the best time to visit is November to early March15.

Questions people ask

Do you tip in Luxor restaurants?

No tip is needed in Egypt's restaurants, but fancier places may add a 10–12% service charge to the bill.

Do restaurants charge foreigners more?

Many restaurants in tourist areas inflate prices for foreigners, so check the price before you order.

Can you visit Nefertari's tomb?

Not for now: the tomb was closed as of January 2026, and the old EGP 2,500 ticket isn't on sale.

Do Egyptian visitors pay the same entry fees?

No. Egyptian adults pay EGP 40 at Luxor Temple and EGP 40 at Hatshepsut Temple.
